Turn along the treed roadway at Uniacke Estate Museum Park in Mount Uniacke in the Halifax Metro region and feel like you’re traveling a direct route to the 1800s!
The Uniacke Estate Museum is housed within an elegant home overlooking Lake Martha. Richard John Uniacke, a prosperous Irish politician, built this country mansion in 1816 and was regarded as one of the grandest houses in Nova Scotia. It was also a favourite homestead of Uniacke’s large family which saw seven generations of his family grow up here.
Today, you can discover a rare survival of one family’s treasured possessions. You can see fine, labeled London furniture and exquisite portraits that have been carefully preserved for hundreds of years as you explore inside the museum.
Outside, museum guests are invited to explore the English country landscape, where you can birdwatch as you stroll or hike along eight walking trails located on the 930 hectare property. The trails vary in length – from 0.7 km to 7.8 km (.4 mi to 4.8 mi) – taking you through forest, along the shoreline of the lake, atop a drumlin, and near marshland. Some trails feature 18th-century English landscape traditions including the remains of a haha wall, a hothouse, and imported trees.
Brochures, parking and picnic tables are located on the museum grounds. The Uniacke Estate Museum is open from early June until early October each year while the Park grounds and trails are open and accessible year-round.
