Description

Travel to a time when remote fishing ports dotted the Atlantic coast and England and France vied for control of North America. Home to the remains of an 18th-century fishing settlement and the ruins of a battle-ravaged earthen fort, Canso Islands National Historic Site welcomes curious explorers upon its windswept shores to journey through the history that forged a nation.

Stop by the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Canso to learn all about Canso history. Hop on a fishing boat for a free ride over to Grassy Island and walk amongst the ruins of the old fort and fishing village. If you are interested in spending more time on the water than on the island, bring your own stand-up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe and check out the view of Grassy Island from the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean.
