As we busily prepare to attend Christmas parties, visit family and friends and to celebrate the holiday season, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.  I am sure everyone has a few “hard-to-shop-for” people on their list and finding unique and meaningful gifts can become a chore.  The following is a fun and simple road trip guaranteed to help make your holiday shopping both stress-free and enjoyable.

Start in Stewiacke, half-way between the North Pole and the Equator, conveniently located between Halifax and Truro just off Highway 102 at Exit 11 (look for the giant Mastodon…you can’t miss it).  Here you’ll have two shopping stops:

Coldstream ClearDistillery Christmas

Coldstream Clear Distillery – Find a flavored liqueur to suit anyone aged 19+on your list.  From salted caramel, coconut, or coffee to cinnamon, apple pie or candy cane! Coldstream Clear even has a great holiday combo pack if you just can’t decide what to choose.

Winding River Art Gallery, Stewiacke, NS

Winding River Art Gallery – I am a big fan of cooperative galleries. Here you’ll find an awesome variety of unique, locally made art from paintings, glass, and wood to jewelry…all under one roof. The gallery even has a handful of rare, limited edition Maud Lewis serigraphs for sale!

Traveling with kids? The Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park is just down the road and is open on weekends from 9am-3pm.  A great opportunity to see real, live reindeer!

Grab a Tim’s coffee and hop back onto Highway 102 to Truro (just 30km down the road) where you’ll take Exit 13 to downtown Truro.  Or alternatively, take the old #2 Highway through Brookfield and grab a few goodies at the Brookfield Bakery along the way. A few suggestions when you get to Truro:

For the hard to buy for teen on your list check out H.A.F. Skate and Tattoo on 72 Inglis Place for original apparel items and all the best brands in skateboarding and snowboarding.

Pearl & Daisy Natural Soap Company, Inglis Street, Truro, NS

While on Inglis definitely check out Sandy’s Fashions for Men for dad, and for mom…well… where do we start?  There are numerous boutiques downtown to explore like Elegant Steps, Moments, Sea Shell Design, Etcetera and Lou Lou’s for apparel or Pearl and Daisy Natural Soap Company (what mom doesn’t love handmade soap?) or Above and Beyond for home décor.  Take it Outside and Stanfield’s Company Store on Inglis offer a great selection of quality men’s and women’s active wear.  If you are really stumped and are looking for inspiration you can’t go wrong with the Nova Scotia Emporium on Prince Street or Thrown Together Pottery on King for a one-of-a-kind treasure.  And who doesn’t need underwear in their stocking?  The Stanfield Factory Outlet is the perfect place to pick up a few skivvies.

Jimolly's Bakery Cafe, Inglis Street, Truro, NS

With all of this shopping you’re definitely going to need a break! Jimmolly’s Bakery Cafe, Bistro 22, and the Fireside Tearoom are in the heart of Truro’s downtown shopping district.  The Novel Tea, Lokal Resto and the Nook and Cranny are other downtown favorites among locals. Truro also has a surprising number of choices for ethnic food including Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and even Jamaican.

By this point you’ll probably notice the convenience and ease of getting around and finding parking in downtown Truro compared to larger city centres (not to mention the fact that the parking is free).  While in Town, enjoy the convenience and variety of the Truro Mall before moving on to your final destination…the Masstown Market!

Masstown Market Christmas

Even if you’ve checked everyone off of your list, you can’t help but get into the Christmas spirit at the Market.  In addition to a variety of specialty local food items, the market has an exceptional gift section and a gorgeous Christmas room that makes it most definitely worth the drive!  The Masstown Market is just a 15 minute drive from Truro on the Trans Canada Highway 104 at Exit 11.  Here you can also grab supper or a treat for the road before completing your round trip home.

Make a night of it? After a day of shopping, the kids will love playing in the indoor pool and you’ll enjoy a soak in the hot tub at one of the many Truro hotels to choose from.  Consider a night out on the town and catch a holiday show at the Marigold Centre or a movie at the Cineplex.

Oh, and don’t miss the classic Christmas lights on Prince Street - sure to get you in the holiday spirit!
Happy shopping, safe travels, and merry stress-less Christmas!
