As a local Nova Scotian, I’m constantly rejoicing the abundance of magnificent cheeses we have. I just want to yell it out to the world every time I indulge, “OMC (oh my cheese), you have to try this cheese”. That’s right, cancel your trip to France, Italy or Spain, everything you need to satisfy your cheesy craving is right here in Nouvelle Ecosse.
Here is my list of everything cheese in Nova Scotia.
Fox Hill Farm is nestled in the lush lands of the Annapolis Valley and produces so many varieties of cheeses. At Fox Hill you can go year round and actually watch the process of cheese making unfold. At the farm they plant the seeds that grow the grass that feeds the cows that make the milk to make the cheese (ah, all in one breath).
The most recent cheese I had from Fox Hill cheese was their quark. It is a soft German cheese with a fresh tangy taste. It can be used as a spread on crackers or as a substitute for ricotta or cream cheese in recipes. It is lower in fat and salt free! It has such a fresh taste you won’t be able to stop snacking.
Ran-Cher Acres is a dairy goat farm specializing in cheese making. Amazing, and I mean amazing, fresh goat cheeses. I am a huge goat cheese fan and I’m telling you, you want to try this stuff.
Ran-Cher Acres is located in Aylesford in the Annapolis Valley so you can conveniently pop up for a visit get your goat cheese and on the way home stop in at Fox Hill Farm.
Also located in Alyesford is Homestead Cheese. These guys specialize in Feta cheese but have a ton of other products at their store too. Their cheese is available in groceries stores across Atlantic Canada and it is so good that the Toronto grocers want it too!
Uban Blue by Blue Harbour Cheese is what got these guys on the cheese map in Nova Scotia. It’s a mild and creamy style of blue cheese and the maker was motivated to make a blue cheese for people who are not keen on blue cheese. This cheese has been selling out in stores across Halifax is a must try on my list!
The Cheese Gypsy is new to the cheese industry and it not a maker but a distributer and cheese value adder. Starting spring of 2014 they will be traveling between Halifax and Peggy’s cove serving up cheesy goodness. I haven’t tried their food yet but if I see them on the highway I will be flagging ‘em down!
Their menu includes items such as lobster and cheddar and roast beef and double crème brie sandwiches. OMC, my mouth is watering.
Ok, so, cheesecake might not actually classified as a type of cheese but it just had to be mentioned. If cheesecake is your thing, you are going to want to check out Sweet Hereafter Cheesecakery. They have over 70 types of cheesecakes on their menu. They have everything from Candies Bacon, Green Tea Tropical and Nova Scotia Maple Walnut, to the classic New York Style. At That Duchman’s Farm, Gouda cheese is their specialty, although they produce other top notch varieties as well. The farm actually won a national award this spring for having the top blue cheese in the country: Dragon’s Breath Blue. Although I am a gigantic cheese fan I have yet to dive into the blue cheeses. This summer trying Dragon’s Breath Blue is on my Must Eat Cheese list. According to the experts (the makers of Dragon’s Breath Blue) it can be eaten straight up, chased by a real bread, like a baguette or sourdough, or even melted over hot pasta.
Wandering Shepard Cheese is an artisan sheep cheese and ewe milk producer on Cape Breton Island. They are located near Sydney so if you are traveling across this lovely Island to get to the Cabot Trail, a quick detour to try this unique cheese will add some cheese bliss to your road trip.
Just when you were wishing you could try all these great cheeses in one spot - well, you’re in luck! There is an annual Cheese Fest held at Luckett’s Vineyard. Local cheese producers will be set up on the property selling and sampling their products! It’s happening Saturday, September 6th; you don’t want to miss it!
The “friendliest place on Earth” sure has a lot of offer when to comes to cheese, you cheddar believe it!
