From dedicated marathoners and cycling enthusiasts to adventure seekers who know that getting dirty is half the fun, we've pulled together a list of challenging, endurance-testing and uniquely Nova Scotian events and activities that will get your blood pumping this year in Nova Scotia!

May 20 - 22, 2016
The Scotiabank Bluenose Marathon is the largest fitness event in Atlantic Canada with the full marathon being a certified Boston Marathon qualifier. Each year, up to 14,000 walkers and runners hit the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth during the Bluenose Marathon weekend. Choose to walk or run the 5km, 10km, team relay, or half or full marathon. There is also a youth run for children.

Think of this as a unique way to tour the Cabot Trail! Each year, 70 relay teams from across Canada and the US tackle Cape Breton's Cabot Trail in a 185 mile/276.33 km, 17 stage relay race that begins in Baddeck and takes runners over steep mountains in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and through small communities along the famous Cabot Trail. Whew!

Participants can register for a 5k, 10k, or 15k run which will take them through the heart of Nova Scotia's wine country to award winning Nova Scotia wineries - Luckett Vineyards, Domain de Grand Pre Winery, L’Acadie Vineyards, Gaspereau Vineyards - with the finish line located at Grand-Pré National Historic Site.

Race the Bay of Fundy tides on the ocean floor at Burntcoat Head Park, the location of the world's highest recorded tides! At low tide, tackle the 2.5k or 5k fun run on the muddy ocean floor. Be sure to wear sneakers that you won't mind getting muddy!

Looking for a hiking challenge this summer? Look no further than the annual 3 Peaks Challenge where this year, hikers will climb Franey Mountain (1,400 ft), Roberts Mountain (1,126 ft) and Acadien Mountain (1,200 ft) with a total distance of 19.8 km… in one day.

The 2016 BIG RIDE, Canada's longest Gran Fondo event, is taking place July 17 on Cape Breton Island's world famous Cabot Trail. Cyclists can choose between cycling the full 300km or shorter options of 200km and 100km while teams can tackle the distance together, all while raising funds for charity.

Runners will enjoy this mainly flat scenic coastal run with some rolling hills and beautiful ocean views. The full marathon, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, takes runners to Nova Scotia’s most southerly point, The Hawk.

Run a 5k or 10k course on a dairy farm - through cow pastures, corn fields, and hay fields - to stations set-up to provide participants with various dairy products such as milkshakes, cheese, chocolate, milk and at the end, ice-cream for everyone.

Now in its 9th year, the Not Since Moses run/walk has attracted thousands of runners and walkers from around the world to Five Islands on the Bay of Fundy. Timing is everything when it comes to the world’s highest tides – and runners and walkers alike must be prepared for a run through tidal pools, thick, slippery mud, and on the ocean floor where hours before there was 50 feet of water. Oh, and be prepared to get muddy and to laugh until your stomach hurts.

From the 90 km loop that will take you through 15 fishing communities and a 60 km route to the Queensport Lighthouse and back along the shores of Chedabucto Bay to 30 km loops, the Lost Shores Gran Fondo, in its inaugural year, will introduce cyclists to the stunningly beautiful Eastern Shore region of Nova Scotia.

Taking place in Eastern Passage near Halifax, Maritime Race Weekend offers runners four distance runs - Sunset + Sunrise 5K, Coastal 10K, Scenic Half Marathon and Classic Marathon – that take participants along gorgeous Atlantic coastline routes. Runners are encouraged to have fun with the distinctively maritime event theme: pirates!

Held along the beautiful Acadian Shores, cyclists can choose between 3 distances: the Gran 117 km loop, the Medio Fondo 67 km loop, or the 35 km Piccolo Fondo ride. Riders will navigate rolling inland roads and pass by towering wooden churches along the panoramic coastal route that hugs beautiful Baie Sainte-Marie.
