International Gathering of the ClansThe quadrennial International Gathering of the Clans in Nova Scotia is a function of the Federation of Scottish Clans.  The official opening of the 2007 gathering will be on April 27 which also commemorates the 20th anniversary of Tartan Day.  Official Flag Raising takes place at the Hector Heritage Centre, Pictou.

Transportation News

Iceland AirBlank image

Icelandair will resume service to Halifax beginning with its summer schedule in 2007.  There will be three flights per week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday departing from Halifax at 10:00 pm and arriving in Keflavik, Iceland the following morning at 5:15 am.  There, passengers can connect onwards to Icelandair’s many other destinations in Scandinavia, Continental Europe and the United Kingdom.  The return flights will depart Iceland at 6:45 pm and arrive in Halifax at 8:20 pm.  This new service will be offered from May to September.

Air Canada has announced the following new services: Effective May 4: Daily Halifax - New York (La Guardia) non-stop using 50-seat Regional Jet.  For the summer season (June 15 - September 15): Daily Halifax - Edmonton non-stop service using 12-seat A319 aircraft. www.aircanada.com

Daily service between Halifax and New York (LGA) via American Eagle was introduced in December.  In addition, weekend nonstop service between Halifax and Chicago O'Hare International Airport will be begin on May 1.  The round-trip service every Saturday and Sunday between the two cities will use a 70-seat Canadair CRJ-700 jet.  www.aa.com

In addition to their daily non-stop service from Halifax Robert L. Stanfield Airport to Washington, Dulles, United Airlines has introduced seasonal service from Halifax to Chicago O’Hare beginning June 7 through October 27 using an Embraer 170 regional jet.  www.united.ca

Joggins Fossil Cliffs

The Joggins Fossil Cliffs along Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy coastline are renowned for extensive deposits of 300-million-year-old fossils.  A 14-km site development is being planned for the Joggins Fossil Cliffs including a new interpretive centre which is expected to open fall 2007.  Efforts are also currently underway to attain UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the area.

Fortress of Louisbourg

The Louisbourg Public Archaeology Program provides a unique opportunity for archaeology enthusiasts to join supervised digs at the Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada.  The 2007 season will focus on field study at the De la Valliere property which was occupied by French, British and New Englanders between 1720 and 1758.  The program will consists of two 5-day field sessions in early-mid August.  During each session, a crew of 10-12 participants will excavate a portion of the De la Valliere property, learn about archaeological field and lab techniques and attend presentations addressing current historical research at the Fortress.  Although the crew will spend much of their time with trowels in hand, there will be ample opportunity for experiencing the sights and sounds of Fortress Louisbourg and exploring the rugged Cape Breton coastline.
