 |  | Halifax International Airport opened its new Preclearance facility on October 4, 2006. Non-stop passengers to US destinations will be processed through US Customs and Border Protection prior to their departure enabling travelers to be treated as domestic passengers on arrival in the United States. |
 |  | Every year since 1971, Nova Scotia has donated a giant evergreen tree to the people of Boston as a thank you for their assistance following the Halifax Explosion. This year’s tree lighting takes place November 30 at 6:30 pm, on the Boston Common.
Halifax was the only city in North America to suffer damage in the First World War when on December 6, 1917, the munitions ship Mont Blanc, and the relief ship Imo, collided in Halifax Harbour causing the largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on the Halifax waterfront has a permanent exhibit on the explosion. |

 |  | The Candy Shop of Cape Breton (formerly the Candy Shop of Isle Madame) will open on January 15, 2007 across from the Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centre in Port Hastings. The Candy Shop carries more than a hundred varieties of fine chocolates from all over the world, including dozens of types of their own handmade, highest quality European truffles, praline, barks and speciality molded chocolates. Also available are hundreds of different hard-to-find “retro” candies. Located on the Peggy’s Cove Road in Glen Haven, the shop will feature quality handmade and local manufactured food, craft and gift items. Open May 1-December 24. Bus tours welcome. This new restaurant will have a lobster supper theme with seating for over 350 people, large paved parking lot, and is wheelchair accessible. The group menu will feature fresh Atlantic Lobster served either hot or cold and various alternative entrees including vegetarian. All meals include all-you-can eat salads, rolls, desserts and beverages. And of course, the driver eats for free! Open May to the end of October.
