DescriptionMother Gaelic's is a 159-year-old house situated on the waterfront of the picturesque Village of Baddeck on Cape Breton Island. Originally built in 1855 and operated as a bank, it became a boarding house/inn, store and tavern in 1883. Annie MacLeod, its operator, spoke only the Gaelic language, and thus became known as "Mother Gaelic". 125 years later, Mother Gaelic's great-granddaughter, Joanie MacLeod, has restored the house to its past splendour as a place for travellers from near and far to stay and soak in the unique culture of Cape Breton Island.
Staying at Mother Gaelic's, you are within walking distance of many attractions. The Alexander Graham Bell Museum is a leisurely 15-minute walk. The Bras d'Or Lakes Interpretive Centre, one of our historical buildings, is just a few minutes away. A short walk will take you to the village wharf where you can board the beautiful tour boat, the Ameoba. It will take you on a wonderful sail of the Bras d'Or lakes, nearing the Bell Estate. There are frequent concerts and events at the nearby Gaelic College, and each summer evening there is a ceilidh held at a small church hall on the main street: truly a reflection of the musical culture of Cape Breton.
Our accommodations include two rooms (twin and queen-sized beds), one ensuite and one private 4-piece bath. Full breakfast is included and served in the dining room between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.; an earlier time can be arranged. There is a television in the gathering room. Property is a central waterfront location. Check-in is between 2 – 6 p.m. We are a proud member of the Baddeck Area Business and Tourism Association. Cash accepted only; no credit cards.
