The Halifax Citadel’s iconic 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs) exercise the Freedom of the City of Halifax. This time honoured tradition dates as far back as the Roman Empire, and was originally granted to military units that had gained the trust of a municipality. These units were permitted to parade through the town with “drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.”
The 78th Highlanders begin their parade at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site at 11 am with a formal march on and medal presentation inside the fort. Following the traditional firing of the noon gun, the entire unit, with pipes, drums, and flying colours, will march to Government House and then to the Grand Parade. 11 am to 1 pm.
