Situated on 15 -hectares (37 acres) of land in beautiful Annapolis Royal, Fort Anne was designed and built as a military fort with the first fort erected on the site by the Scots in 1629. Four forts were subsequently built by the French beginning in 1643.
Visitors can explore the remains of various 18th and 19th century buildings, including an early 18th century gunpowder magazine and 1797 British field officers' quarters. Step inside the Officers' Quarters Museum and get a feel for history by trying on children's clothing from the Acadian period, donning a French or British military uniform, or stepping inside a pair of wooden shoes. Lift a musket to get a feel for the weapons soldiers carried on the battlefield. Take a photo of the kids in costume so they can share their adventure with their friends.
Admire the Fort Anne Heritage Tapestry (2.4m x 5.5m/8ft x 18ft) depicting 400 years of history in the area. Explore the Officers' Quarters and fortifications with the Fort Anne "Seek and Find" family activity. Watch your step as you go down into the "Black Hole", be certain to venture into the 1708 Powder Magazine, go into the ditch of the fort to gain an appreciation for these 300 year old walls, and imagine being in a battle as you admire the 4000 pound cannons.
Take a stroll around the oldest English Graveyard in Nova Scotia. Discover the perimeter walking trail with its grand vistas of the Annapolis River and Annapolis Basin.
Guided and self-guided tours are available including a tour of Fort Anne and its fortifications, tours for school groups, and a special evening Candlelight Graveyard Tour. Close your adventure by enjoying the panoramic view while picnicking on the grounds. Fort Anne National Historic Site is a Bay of Fundy Recommended Experience.
