Discover this famous Nova Scotia canal and its tidal lock system specially designed to link the Atlantic Ocean with the Bras d’Or Lakes.

Located on Cape Breton Island, St. Peter’s Canal crosses an isthmus in the Village of St. Peter’s. Watch its workings as all types of pleasure craft and the occasional commercial vessel pass through. Outdoor exhibits describe the lock’s unique double gates, each with 4 swinging doors that form a diamond shape when closed. The gates, designed to compensate for the tidal differences between the ocean and the lake, are the only ones of their kind in North America.

St. Peter’s Canal is adjacent to the Nicolas Denys Museum and Battery Provincial Park. A picnic area is available.
