Summer Hiking

Nova Scotia Hiking Trails in Summer

As spring gives way to summer, the air is getting warmer and the trees are starting to bud. It’s time to shake off the winter blues and embrace the great outdoors on one of Nova Scotia’s fabulous hiking trails.

Escape to the beach or backcountry

Travel far beyond the beaten path without travelling very far at all. Just 30 minutes west of Halifax you will find Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park where three white sand crescent beaches lead the way to a 10 kilometre (6.2 mile) hike along Pennant Point. On the Eastern Shore, Taylor Head Provincial Park features hikes for new or more experienced hikers including the short Beach Walk or the longer Headland Trail. If backcountry hikes are what you seek, visit Kejimkujik National and Historic Site and wander down several gentle trails or take on more than 100 kilometres (62 Miles) of backcountry hiking and wilderness camping.

Walk where land and sea meet

Breathe in the salt air and explore our extraordinary coastline. No matter where you are in Nova Scotia, you are never more than 67 kilometres 41 miles) from the coast. The Skyline Trail is one of 25 hiking trails in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park where you can view the Gulf of St. Lawrence or the rugged Atlantic ocean. For a different view, visit Blomidon Provincial Park where over 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) of hiking trails provide views of the Minas Basin and the phenomenal Fundy tides.

Are you up to the challenge?
In July, test your endurance by climbing three mountains in one day in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. You’ll climb 1,300 metres and hike the equivalent of a half-marathon with other serious hikers. Take a deep breath, make the next step and soldier on.

Hiking with Nova Scotians

There is no better way to discover our trails than to experience them with the people who know them best – local guides and hikers. Check out some of the guided hikes that Hike Nova Scotia offers throughout the year or check out the Outdoor Adventure Tours section for local hiking providers.
