Fishing in Nova Scotia

Pack your favourite lure. With 7,400 km of saltwater coastline, 6,000 fresh lakes and more rivers and streams than we can count, Nova Scotia is a sport fishing paradise.

Atlantic Salmon, Trout & Bass

Spend a day angling for the legendary Atlantic salmon of the fabled Margaree Valley. Head out of historic Lunenburg Harbour for a day or two of deep-sea fishing. Take part in a bass fishing derby. Or just quietly teach your child to cast for trout from the shores of a tranquil stream in Kejimkujik National Park.

Fishing Guides & OutfittersThere are dozens of guides and outfitters all across the province to help you get the most out of your Nova Scotia fishing vacation. Let them lead you to the perfect pool on an inland river or take you out to sea to their secret spot for landing huge shark.

All the need-to-know info from bag limits to season closings to where to pick up a license can be found right here: http://www.gov.ns.ca/fish/sportfishing/angling/

Tips for a great fishing trip:

  • Brook trout is Nova Scotia’s provincial fish. It’s the favourite species of Nova Scotia anglers followed by rainbow trout and smallmouth bass.
  • The province hosts a Free Sportfishing Weekend early in June. Everyone can try their hand at fishing for two days with no license required. Bag limits still apply.
  • There are 25 barrier-free sport fishing locations in the province for anglers with physical challenges.
  • Take a class. Both the province and private operators are happy to teach new anglers the ways of the woods and waters.

There's something about hiking along a shoreline in the fall that I enjoy. It must be the cooler temperature, or the scenery when the leaves have started to fall off the trees. The grass is still green and I need to be outside!
