The Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and promote Cape Breton's traditional Celtic Music. The Archive connects the past to the present and preserves musical connections of communities and families of the island. It's located in Judique which is the oldest existing Scottish settlement and Highland Catholic parish that exists on Cape Breton Island today.
It's located only 20 minutes from the Canso Causeway up Rt.19. Follow the Ceilidh Trail in Inverness County on the western side of the island.
The Tom Rankin Interactive Exhibit Room provides a visual and aural orientation to music tunes and traditions. It's a nostalgic walk down memory lane for those who grew up with the sounds of a fiddle or the bagpipes. It's a great orientation to those new to island traditions.
The Archives holds a Reference Library and Special Collections of audio and video recordings, photographs, family histories of musical families, information folders on local musicians. and a collection of tune books. It's a place to get familiar with the music culture of the island.
If you have a specific topic of study, it's best to call or email the archives before your visit so staff can prepare the material. Welcome Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DqsRGV4xt8
