The society was formed in 1937, its main objective is to preserve the heritage and artifacts of the Barrington area. The collection consists of newspapers dating back to 1887, genealogy reseach information, published genealogies and photos. War, Temperance, school and church records are available for viewing. Land grants and Old Meeting House meetings records are also available for viewing. Clothing and hats along with piano, organ and melodian give an insight to the mid to late 1800s.

The Society also operates Barrington Woolen Mill Museum and the Old Meeting House Museum for the Nova Scotia Museum.

Major family collection: Nickerson; family files and publications, genealogies, charts, family bibles, scrapbooks, Church registers: Shelburne baptisms 1790-18207, cemetery inscriptions, funeral home records, township books, vital statistics: marriage licenses 1928-1959, county, municipal records: Electoral list 1895 Barrington area, Overseers of the Poor 1836-65, school records: attendance registers 1896-1910 for Municipality of Barrington schools, local newspapers.

The museum responds to general and genealogical inquiries. Fees quoted upon request. Local researchers are available for hire.

Scope of Holdings
The collection includes many photographs of scenes in the municipality of Barrington. Many images from the 1890-1930 period.

Extent of Holdings
Approximately 100 glass negatives, 20 tin plates, 350 photographs. Photographs are accessible through a card catalogue.

Research Fees
The museum responds to research inquiries. A research fee of $10.00 per day is charged. Requests may be forwarded to another organization; in some cases a fee may be charged.

Duplication Fees
Photocopying services are available at 35 cents per copy. Photographic reproduction services available. Fees quoted upon request.

Cemetery Holdings
All of Western Shelburne County and newspaper transcriptions from South West Nova Scotia.

Oldest gravemarker in the burial grounds at the Old Meeting House.  The Old Meeting House was built in 1765 by the Planters who settled here in the 1760's.  The building is the Oldest Nonconformist Church remaining in Canada.
