On January 23, they celebrated one year of being in business. The next day, they won the Halifax Chamber of Commerce award for New Business of the Year. It's been a busy 12 months for the founders of North Brewing, formerly Bridge Brewing.
If you like your beers tall, blonde and Belgian, you'll love the brews coming from North Brewing.
"Belgian beer is a personal favourite of mine." Brewery owner Peter Burbridge says (pictured above at right). "I've always liked the romance of monastery brewing."
My favourite of the moment is their aptly named Strong Dark Belgian. At 8.5% ABV, it's the perfect winter sipper, dipped in dark chocolate with a kick of spice on the finish.
Burbridge wasn't sure how Halifax would feel about Belgian beers, but the demand has been overwhelming. They brew the equivalent of about 2,000 750ml growler fills each week. With two new fermenters sitting idle out back, they'll be doubling their brewing capacity in just a few weeks.
"Josh and I have a competition," Peter says. "He tries to fill the fridge and I try to empty it. I'm winning the war right now."
Josh Herbin is, of course, Bridge's brewer and Peter's partner in the business. Josh has been home brewing for more than 10 years and shared Peter's passion for the project.
The storefront is humble, offering four beers on tap for filling 750ml and 1.89L growlers. Staples include a Belgian Blonde, a Saison, a Belgian IPA and their ever popular Farmhouse Ale. The folks at Bridge love being a part of the North End. It may be far from the waterfront, but Peter hopes more tourists find themselves in his neighbourhood.
"It's such a vibrant community, you can get an authentic local food, beer and wine experience here." Peter says.
If you want to try a glass of North's latest beer on draught, ask for it at one of the 18 restaurants in the city that offer it on tap, including: Brooklyn Warehouse, Gus' Pub, Stillwell Beer Bar, The Argyle and Freeman's.
