After a day of exploring Nova Scotia, it's great to pull up a stool and enjoy one of the the pubs around the province . Whether it's Halifax, where there are over 30 pubs and sport bars downtown including six breweries, or craft brew pubs from Cape Breton to Yarmouth, there's a bit of Nova Scotia culture to be celebrated inside those walls.
On January 23, they celebrated one year of being in business. The next day, they won the Halifax Chamber of Commerce award for New Business of the Year. It's been a busy 12 months for the founders of North Brewing, formerly Bridge Brewing.
It's fresh, unfiltered and naturally carbonated. Some beer geeks call this smooth brew "a living beer." Some brewers call it an art form.
For the uninitiated, cask conditioned ale is a beer that starts brewing in the fermenter; then it's carefully transferred to a cask for 1-2 weeks, where it ferments a second time. You can't test the beer until the fermentation is complete. When it works, the result is brew that offers subtle carbonation and full, complex flavours. As a beer geek myself, all I can say is - try it. You'll get it.
My morning drive through the Wentworth Valley enroute to Malagash was nothing short of stunning. The fall colours were still in their prime and I counted four white tail deer in fields along the way. I was heading to Bay Enterprises where I was about to learn about the wonderful world of oysters and quahogs.
