Field Guide Discovery

I wondered what was a good spot to explore in between Oakfield Provincial Park and Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. The area of Enfield and Elmsdale initially grew in the 1820's due to the railroad boom and the Shubenacadie Canal. We zoned in an area nine miles (16 kms) from Shubenacadie to explore at the Nine Mile River Multi-Use Trails.

The community led trail system recently celebrated their grand opening. The multi-use trail system has just under 10 kms of trails for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Right off the Enfield Road, the parking area & the trail-head sign greeted us with six trails to hike. We decided to follow the Green Forest & Witches Cauldron trails as they were the most used and well marked. My hiking partner, Keji the black lab was anxious to jump out of the car and get started.

The hike started out under a wooded canopy with several board-walks over the wet areas. The trail twisted and turned around forest of hemlock, pine and spruce with a little hardwood for good measure. I noticed the large sections of moss that covered the forest floor as we hiked.

We encountered a young couple with large brimmed hats and wicker baskets. They were picking wild mushrooms. It turned out that the soil composition and forest was a great spot to forage for this Mycological couple who knew what to look for.

The realization that this area was a perfect location, due to the forest mix, to carry a field guide and spend some time identifying the tress & vegetation; a skill that would make an outdoor activity more interesting, especially with the younger crowd.

Expect a few hours of exploration and to encounter other outdoor enthusiasts on the trails with you. Casual footwear will do the trick, but appropriate gear once you enter the deep section of the trail is recommended.
